With age and in some cases, abuse, we tend to lose the sparkling smile that we once had. Our sugary diet, fizzy drinks, tea, coffee and smoking all add up and can leave us with yellow, stained teeth. Even if we keep up a regular program of oral hygiene, normal brushing and flossing don’t seem to work anymore. Sooner or later, many people consider teeth whitening.

We prefer instead, to try out the various home teeth whitening kits that are available, in the hope of saving a few bucks. Not to mention the fear that we associate with a visit to the dentist. They all have a fairly low initial cost. But if they don’t give you the results you were looking for, what have you saved? And if they do work, the effect tends to be short lived, meaning that you have to repeat the treatment time after time to maintain your white teeth. The higher front end cost of going professional could give you whiteness that lasts for years.
Going for Professional teeth whitening might not work out that much more expensive in the long term and if you are really happy with the outcome, you will probably think that it is money well spent. Going into a job interview with a new, confident smile could even make you some money. And it need not be a scary prospect. There are several techniques available, usually quite painless.

Having decided to go with a professional, how do you choose? It would be ideal if you already have a dentist that you know and trust, someone with expertise in professional teeth whitening. If not, a lot of people are going in for teeth whitening now. Do you know anyone who has had it done? Are you impressed with their results and would they recommend the person who treated them?
A personal recommendation is the best but failing that, you could try consulting trade journals. Are their people who specialize in teeth whitening? Can they offer you a range of options that would be suitable for you? Do they have testimonials from previous clients who are happy with their work? Some might offer a free initial assessment to see what the best course of action would be. That would be a good chance to meet them find out what your gut instinct tells you about them.
Professional teeth whitening may not be an option for everybody, but if you can afford the upfront cost, it can be an investment in yourself.
